Ray Manzarek on “The Golden Scarab”

“The Golden Scarab” is the story of a young man’s journey into consciousnesses, from the closed circle of ordinary reality into the realm of light. -our true home. As you listen, think of each song as a scene in a film or a stage production; taking place behind your eyes.

THE STREET: In the first piece, the people wait for a leader, a guru – perhaps even a Messiah, to tell them, to lead them. But, ironically, each person can only do it… alone.

OUTER SPACE: Next, the young man – who has perhaps ingested a psychedelic substance – rides off into the cosmos. On a journey. A voyage through the spheres. Into unity.

HELL: But, the vision also carries a dark side. A side born of our own fears, and our own lusts. Into madness he descends…

EGYPT – The 18TH DYNASTY: Now, to dispel the fear, he remembers the sun. The orb of pure light. The most perfect representation of the divine consciousness. From ancient Egypt to the present day. The same sun. The same mind. The same creator. The ENERGY!

A ZEN GARDEN: How to bring the vision back into reality? Our voyager begins a study in Zen-like questions. Koans, questions for the rational mind to consider. Or questions to break it.

A BARREN PLAIN: Then, confusion as the mind turns on itself. The young man seeks refuge in false idols, fattened calves, the Temple of Mammon, the words of unexamined authorities, fundamentalisms of all sorts, as we all do at one point or another in all our lives.

RAGE IN THE CITIES: Losing sight of the oneness – he cannot tolerate the diversity of thought, or opinions, or ways of seeing the world. Now he will choose and he will judge. But then – through the grace of the energy – he sees the future. The children of the ages to come. The Golden Race.

THE PARK: And finally – he’s home. The point of departure is the point of return. A summer Sunday in the park with the people of the planet. With every living thing. How divine. How beautiful we are!
